The project for our client pferdewetten.de dealt with a complex and multi-layered IT landscape, characterized by a variety of different technologies and systems implemented at various stages of the company's history. This heterogeneity led to a number of challenges that had to be addressed as part of the project.

Optimization of a Large Online Shop

In a pioneering project, our team made a significant contribution to transforming the IT infrastructure of one of Germany's largest electronics retailers before Teratis Solutions was founded. Originally aimed at preparing the systems for high customer volumes during peak times like Black Friday, the optimizations carried out led to further significant improvements.

Project Goal

The main goal of the project was to adapt the retailer's IT systems to handle larger customer volumes during peak sales times like Black Friday without risking system failures.

Implementation and Technical Solutions

Migration to Google Cloud: The previous bare metal hosting solution was converted into a modern, scalable Google Cloud solution. This migration enabled a more flexible and efficient infrastructure.
Software redevelopment: A significant part of the software was redeveloped. A state-of-the-art solution in GoLang replaced the older, less powerful PHP code. This led to increased performance and reduced error rates.

Achieved Successes

In addition to achieving the primary goal – handling customer peaks on Black Friday – these technical optimizations led to further significant improvements:
Increased order capacity: On Black Friday, the order volume increased by 50%, which was a direct result of the improved system performance.
Increased system availability: System availability improved by 20%, which was crucial in reducing downtime.
Reduced system costs: The introduction of auto-scaling solutions reduced monthly system costs by 60%.
Reduced CO2 footprint: The migration resulted in halving the CO2 footprint, contributing to the company's environmental protection goals.

Proof of Concept: BookAdviser.ai

In the digital era, where consumers increasingly expect personalized and intuitive online experiences, our company has developed an advanced approach to product search - bookadviser.ai. Our goal was to create a system that not only responds to traditional search methods but also inspires users through content and similarities – a particularly critical aspect in the extensive and diverse book market.

Challenge

The main challenge was to develop a search functionality that allows users to find books based on their content or similarities to other books. Queries such as "books similar to Harry Potter" or "thrillers with a female protagonist" should yield intuitive and precise results. This requirement called for an advanced AI solution capable of processing large amounts of data efficiently and making relevant connections.

Solution

Our team developed a proof of concept for an AI-based product search that is based on the following key technologies:
Google Cloud hosting with auto-scaling functionality: To ensure high availability and scalability, we chose to host in Google Cloud. The auto-scaling functionality allows the system to dynamically adjust to demand by automatically scaling resources as needed.
Next.JS for a high-performance and optimized web application: The choice of Next.JS enabled us to implement a fast and SEO-optimized frontend solution that improves the user experience.
OpenAI API integration for state-of-the-art AI solutions: By integrating the OpenAI API, we were able to use advanced AI models to understand user queries and deliver relevant results.
GitHub Actions for secure and automated deployments: Using GitHub Actions facilitated continuous integration and delivery, minimizing the risk of errors and increasing the security of our deployments.

Results

The developed proof of concept demonstrated that it is possible to create a search function that allows users to discover books in a completely new way. Initial tests and user feedback confirm the effectiveness and user-friendliness of the solution. By applying state-of-the-art technologies and AI, we were not only able to overcome the challenges but also create a platform that has the potential to fundamentally change the way we search for and discover books online.
